Select the best video size

Narakeet is an automatic video maker, and can help you create videos for YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and many other purposes. This guide explains how to choose the right size for your videos, and also has downloadable templates you can use to quickly get started.

If you are creating a video from a presentation (such as Powerpoint or Google Slides), make sure that your presentation slide format is at least as big as the video you are trying to create. If you are creating a video from a script, make sure that embedded assets (images or video clips) are in the right proportions. We also recommend that the assets should be at least as big as the video you are trying to create. Narakeet can automatically resize the assets, but if you create a large video from a small image, the output may look blurry.

Standard video sizes

The two most common video sizes for online platforms today are 720p (also known as HD) and 1080p (also known as Full-HD).

720p dimensions

720p is 1280x720 pixels.

For Powerpoint slides, this is 17.78x10.0 inches, or 45.16x25.4 cm.

To specify 720p resolution dimensions in Narakeet scripts, set the size to 720p.

This format is best for informal videos for YouTube, Twitter or Facebook.

1080p dimensions

1080p is 1920x1080 pixels.

For Powerpoint slides, this is 26.67x15.0 inches, or 67.73x38.1 cm.

To specify 1080p resolution dimensions in Narakeet scripts, set the size to 1080p.

This format is best for a higher-resolution video for HD TV sets or professional video streaming.

Best size for Instagram video

Instagram recommends videos in 4:5 aspect ratio, with a height between 566 and 1350 pixels with a width of 1080 pixels. The recommended size for standard Instagram feed videos is 1080 x 1350 pixels. For square Instagram feed videos, we recommend 1080 x 1080 pixels. For Instagram stories, the recommended resolution is 1080 x 1920 pixels.

Best size for Pinterest video

Pinterest recommends square videos, or vertical with aspect ratio 2:3 or 9:16. For square Pinterest video pins, the recommended size is 1080 x 1080 pixels. For 2:3 vertical videos, the recommended size is 720 x 1080 pixels. For 9:16 vertical videos, the recommended size is 720 x 1280 pixels.

Best size for LinkedIn video

LinkedIn recommends videos in resolution ranges between 256x144 and 4096x2304 pixels, with an aspect ratio from 1:2.4 to 2.4:1. The recommended size for LinkedIn videos is 1728 x 720 pixels.

Note that the maximum video duration for LinkedIn is 10 minutes and that videos are muted by default, so it might be useful to burn the subtitles onto the video directly.

Best size for Twitter video

Twitter recommends videos in 16:9 or 1:1 aspect ratio. The best size for Twitter videos is 1280 x 720 pixels, or 720 x 720 pixels for square videos.

Best size for Facebook video

Facebook recommends videos in 16:9 resolution, so the best size for Facebook videos is 1280 x 720 pixels.

For carousel videos, Facebook recommends square format, 1080 x 1080 pixels.

Changing the size for Powerpoint slides

In most versions of PowerPoint, you can set the slide size from the Design tab of the toolbar ribbon, or the Page Setup option from the File menu. For more information, check out the page Change the size of your slides from Office 365 Help.

Most Powerpoint versions let you choose width and height using centimetres or inches, not pixels. Narakeet assumes you use 72 pixels per inch (standard screen density). For example, to set the height of 720 pixels, use 10 inches (or 25.4cm). Here are some common video pixel sizes converted to centimetres and inches:

pixelsinchescentimetres
72010.025.4
108015.038.1
128017.7845.16
135018.7547.63
172824.060.96
192026.6767.73

If you are starting from scratch, you can also use one of the templates from the Powerpoint templates section below to get started quickly.

If you have existing slides, you can quickly convert to a new format by copying your slides from the original PowerPoint and pasting these into one of the templates, while selecting “Keep source formatting”. Powerpoint will automatically resize the text and assets to fit the new slide size.

Creating multiple formats from a single presentation

Narakeet can automatically resize slides to fit the selected video format, so you can create a single presentation and then build videos in different resolutions or even proportions.

To do that, create the presentation in the highest resolution of all the target formats, and make sure the important content is centered on the page. When Narakeet resizes the slides, if the video proportions do not match the input proportions, some content around the edges might get cut off. You can control how Narakeet resizes slides, and optionally fit the content with padding bars or stretch it to match the video. For more information, see the guide on Automatically resizing slides to fit video.

Narakeet limitations

To prevent abuse, Narakeet limits videos to the maximum of 2560 pixels width and height. This is enough to create all the recommended video sizes for the various social networks, even Quad HD.

If you need to create even larger videos, please get in touch by email at contact@narakeet.com.
